Dutch Homeowners Worry About Rising Living Costs

According to a recent report from the Dutch Mortgage Association (NVB), more homeowners are becoming concerned about affording their monthly housing expenses — including mortgage payments, energy bills, and property taxes.

The percentage of people worried about their fixed housing costs has risen sharply. Especially those with variable incomes or higher energy bills are feeling the pressure.

So far, there has not been a significant increase in missed mortgage payments. However, the NVB warns that affordability is under pressure, especially with higher inflation and interest rates.

New buyers are particularly vulnerable. They often have smaller financial buffers and are more exposed to recent rate increases.

What can you do? Make sure you have a clear picture of your monthly costs, and consider building an emergency fund. If needed, talk to a mortgage advisor about adjusting your mortgage or refinancing.
